We were delighted to be recommended by Tektura to deliver the specialist wallcovering installation for The Green Room, the recently transformed bar at Newcastle Theatre Royal. Working within one of the city’s most iconic cultural landmarks, our team helped create a stunning hospitality space where history and craftsmanship come together.
The project we delivered for Design North centred around the installation of bespoke scenic wallpapers featuring artwork by award-winning artist Beth Travers of BOBO1325. Designed to celebrate the Theatre Royal’s rich heritage, the space offers visitors a memorable setting before and after performances, with every wall playing a part in telling the theatre’s story.
The brief
As part of the refurbishment of The Green Room, Newcastle Theatre Royal wanted to create a bar that felt every bit as theatrical as the performances taking place just a few steps away. Tektura recommended our DS Painting & Decorating team to install a series of bespoke wallcoverings featuring artwork created by local artist Beth Travers.
The illustrations celebrate key moments from the Theatre Royal’s long and colourful history, combining historic characters and dramatic scenes all in one immersive design.
The artwork was designed to wrap continuously around the room, making precision non-negotiable. Every section needed to line up perfectly so the finished space flowed naturally from wall to wall. This would allow patrons to appreciate the artwork as a complete piece rather than a series of individual panels.
The solution
Our experienced wallpaper hanging team worked closely with Tektura’s specialist wallcoverings to bring the artist’s vision to life. Installing large-format scenic wallpapers requires careful planning, accurate setting out and meticulous attention to detail.
Before installation began, we prepared every wall to provide the ideal surface for the finished product. We then positioned each panel with precision so that the artwork aligned perfectly across corners, joins, and feature walls.
The bespoke illustrations are packed with a rich collection of colours, characters, and, of course, theatrical references, all printed onto high-quality scenic wallpapers. Our priority was to keep continuity throughout the installation, with every detail contributing to the overall visual impact of the space.
By combining specialist installation techniques with a careful, methodical approach, our team delivered a seamless finish that allows the artwork to take centre stage while complementing the theatre’s newly refurbished hospitality area.
