Case Study The Tynemouth Castle Inn

The Tynemouth Castle Inn

Revitalising a Tyneside Art Deco icon for The Inn Collection Group

We partnered with The Inn Collection Group to restore and redecorate The Tynemouth Castle Inn. This prominent Tyneside icon, built in the distinctive Art Deco style in the 1930s, enjoys commanding views over Longsands Beach and Tynemouth’s Grand Parade. The hotel holds a long history of providing rejuvenating stays on the North Sea coast. This project aimed to comprehensively refurbish the entire venue to modern, high-specification standards.

The brief

The Inn Collection Group required complete, high-quality internal and external redecoration works for the historic hotel within a very tight deadline, as the entire project needed to be finished just in time for the crucial festive break opening. The scope was extensive, involving the renovation of 72 bedrooms, communal areas, a large pub, an ice cream shop, and a fish & chip shop, all of which demanded high-specification finishes. Specifically, the project required specialised skills for the precise application of premium materials, including Tektura, House of Hackney, and Morris & Co. wall coverings.

Furthermore, the exterior restoration presented a significant challenge, as existing coatings on the stonework needed to be carefully stripped back using a chemical solution to restore the historic façade and apply new protective, weather-resistant colour.

The project’s success relied on high-quality products from supply chain partners including Johnstone’s Trade Paints and Dulux Trade.

The solution

We deployed a team of experienced decorators and apprentices who worked diligently to meet the challenging deadlines.

  • Our skilled decorators expertly installed a wide selection of high-quality wall coverings with precision to various shaped ceilings and walls.
  • We applied a range of vibrant colours to the large pub area to create separate, intimate, and visually engaging customer spaces.
  • Our team created a stunning vintage-inspired ice cream shop using unique finishes, including a distressed effect on the counter and a lime wash effect on the walls to add texture and character, along with applying gold paint and spraying chrome vents to create an elegant and luxurious atmosphere.
  • Exterior stonework was successfully stripped and recoated to restore its appearance and provide essential weather protection.

Results & benefits

We successfully delivered the complex project to an extremely high standard, which was evidenced by the seamless opening of The Tynemouth Castle Inn precisely on schedule for the festive break. This time-critical delivery enabled the client to commence trading during the crucial holiday period without delay.

The tailored interior finishes, including custom wall coverings and bespoke decorative effects, successfully transformed the venue into a modern, luxurious, and visually engaging destination, significantly elevating the guest experience. Furthermore, the restoration of the external stonework ensures the historic façade is protected from the coastal elements for years to come, providing crucial asset protection.

Ultimately, the consistent quality delivered across 72 bedrooms, the pub, and all retail outlets ensures a unified, high-quality experience for all guests, solidifying the hotel’s reputation as a premier destination.

The standard of execution was independently recognised, with our team receiving Highly Commended status at the PDA Premier Trophy Awards in 2024 for the project, as well as securing a position as a Finalist for Johnstone’s Painter of the Year 2023 in the Hospitality, Leisure, and Retail category.
