Transforming a Gateshead landmark for Yeshiva Lezeirim Tiferes Yaakov

Our team at Davison Solutions was proud to lead the extensive decorative transformation of the former Swallow Hotel into the new home for Yeshiva Lezeirim Tiferes Yaakov. Located in the heart of Gateshead, this project involved repurposing a derelict 1960s landmark into a prestigious educational institution and communal hub.

By combining specialist spraying techniques with traditional craftsmanship, we helped turn a neglected structure into a high specification yeshiva that provides housing, study areas, and dining facilities for over 250 students and staff.

The brief

The building, originally constructed in the 1960s as the Five Bridges Hotel, had stood derelict since 2014. Yeshiva Lezeirim saw the potential to breathe new life into the site, but the transition from an abandoned hotel to a bustling college required a massive aesthetic and structural overhaul.

The brief for Davison Solutions was to provide a full-scale internal decorative package that respected the building’s unique architectural features, including high ceilings, marble staircases, and intricate coving. The priority was to create a bright, clean, and inspiring environment for the Beth Midrash (study hall) and communal areas, while ensuring every meeting point between paint, tile, and woodwork was finished with absolute precision.

The solution

We deployed a specialist team to manage the complex requirements of the site, which included working at height and protecting high-value original features.

Our work included:

  • Applying a flawless sprayed finish to the modern ornate ceilings and every piece of intricate coving, ensuring even coverage in every cut-out and recess
  • Extensive staining and varnishing of woodwork throughout the building, creating a sophisticated dark-wood contrast against the bright white and cream finishes
  • Full redecoration of the upper walls and ceilings across all classrooms, offices, and hallways to create a cohesive, professional feel
  • Focused attention on the main study hall, where we decorated the large ornate stage used by the Rabbi for teachings. This included meticulous protection of the integrated safe that houses sacred scriptures
  • Precision finishing at every meeting point where paint, marble, and tile converged to ensure a sharp, clean transition across the building’s unique materials

Results & benefits

The transformation has turned a once-derelict eyesore into a standout piece of architecture for the Orthodox Jewish community in Gateshead. The contrast between the dark stained wood and the bright white ceilings, paired with the existing marble and tiling, has given the college a truly elevated atmosphere.

The Beth Midrash hall has been transformed into a bright and dignified space that fully supports the yeshiva’s spiritual and educational mission. By carefully protecting the building’s original 1960s character while modernising the finish, we have ensured its longevity for another generation. This durability is reinforced in high-traffic areas, such as the classrooms and dining halls, through the use of professional-grade sprays and varnishes that maintain a premium look even under heavy daily use. Ultimately, this project showcases Davison Solutions’ ability to manage large-scale commercial transformations for meaningful causes, contributing directly to the growth and wellbeing of the local community.
